John Clarke was a great scholar who had mastered several fields of learning in his early life. He was influential in the first years of our great country as a doctor, a statesman, and a preacher. He drew up the Portsmouth (Rhode Island) Compact, which was signed by twenty-three leading men. He also started the First Baptist Church in America, which he pastored for thirty-eight years.
